The British Takeaway Campaign calls for business rates overhaul

The British Takeaway Campaign, an umbrella group representing those involved in the supply and preparation of the nation’s favourite foods, commented on the April 2018 uplift of business rates.

Chair of the British Takeaway Campaign Ibrahim Dogus, said:

“Business rates remain one of the biggest burdens on takeaway restaurants. The latest rise is a timely reminder of the need for Government to do more to support small independent takeaway businesses who are facing a triple whammy of rising business rates, food and labour costs.

“With more than a third of all takeaway restaurants warning that they would be negatively impacted by the last rates revaluation, and many firms yet to receive the relief they are due, the current business rates regime runs the risk of stifling the growth of an industry worth around £9.4 billion each year.

“That’s why we’re calling on the Government to overhaul the business rates regime to make it fairer and more transparent, as well as to ensure that local councils are prevented from hoarding business rates relief funds. A full review of the business rates regime is now long overdue.”
